Smoke from Canadian forest fires fills New York skies

Sylvie Claire / June 7, 2023

The many forest fires in Canada are having an impact as far south as the US East Coast. Smoke from the hundreds of wildfires in eastern Canada has migrated south and shrouded New York City in a haze, the New York Times reported Tuesday evening.

Panoramic photos of Manhattan showed the extent to which smoke had invaded the New York skyline. The city warned of poor air quality.

After putting measures in place at around 10:00 pm on Tuesday evening, New York Mayor Eric Adams declared that air quality in some parts of the city was "very poor". Authorities in the Canadian cities of Ottawa and Toronto, as well as the American states of Minnesota and Massachusetts, also warned residents of poor air quality.

Numerous fires have been raging in western and northeastern Canada for several weeks now. In the southeastern province of Nova Scotia, the situation has improved somewhat. In Quebec, some 160 fires are still active, of which nearly 110 are considered out of control, local authorities reported on Tuesday.
