Elton John bids farewell to the stage: "I wouldn't be here without you ».

Sylvie Claire / July 11, 2023

After a career spanning more than 50 years, Elton John took to the stage for the last time this Saturday, July 8. The British singer had begun his farewell tour in 2018 before being brought to a screeching halt by the Covid-19 pandemic and a hip injury.

The tour ended in Stockholm, Sweden, bringing to a close a 54-year career. His last song on stage was "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", released in 1973. Elton John was keen to salute his fans and thank them. "The last (concert, ed. note) and we end in the beautiful city of Stockholm in Sweden. My very first show in Sweden was on July 7, 1971, so more or less 52 years ago to the day," he declares.

I've had the most wonderful career, beyond all expectations," continues the star. "I wouldn't be here without you (...) It's been my lifeblood to play for you and you've been absolutely magnificent - thank you. I'll never forget you. I've given so many concerts, how could I forget? You're in my head, my heart and my soul, and I thank you so much. »

Belgian audiences were already able to bid farewell to the singer in May 2019. He gave a 3-hour show at Antwerp's Sportpaleis. The same year, the cinema paid tribute to him with the film "RocketMan", a biopic on his life and career.

Although Elton John is no longer performing, he is planning to release a new album this autumn. In recent years, he has collaborated with other stars, including Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa and Britney Spears, who made a comeback to singing.
