Plane crash in South Korea: the two black boxes failed to record the last minutes before the accident

Steph Deschamps / January 13, 2025

“Analysis revealed that the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR) were not recording during the four minutes prior to the aircraft's collision” with the wall at the end of the runway that caused the aircraft to burst into flames, the ministry said in a statement.

This Boeing 737-800 belonging to the South Korean low-cost carrier Jeju Air, which was en route from Bangkok, had landed on its belly at Muan airport (south-west), seconds before smashing into a locator, a navigation aid installed here on a concrete-reinforced mound.

The authorities plan to “investigate the cause of the data loss”, says the statement, while joint investigations between South Korean and American experts, including from Boeing, were launched after the tragedy.

The most likely explanations for the fatal crash of Jeju Air flight 2216 are a bird strike, a landing gear malfunction and the presence of this obstacle hit by the plane.

The pilot sent out a bird strike warning before aborting his first landing attempt. On his second attempt, the landing gear did not extend.
