Tesla's first Cybertruck electric pickup is out of the factory

American carmaker Tesla announced on Saturday that the first example of its Cybertruck electric pickup had rolled off the production line at its mega-factory in Texas, in the southern USA.
First Cybertruck built in Giga Texas," tweeted the company, posting a photo showing the vehicle surrounded by dozens of people wearing yellow safety vests and hard hats in what appears to be a hangar.
Tesla and Twitter boss Elon Musk reposted the message with the comment: "Congrats Tesla Team ».
In April, the automaker had stressed that production of this pickup was "on track" to begin, as planned, sometime this year at its new plant in Texas.
The futuristic-looking machine, a kind of metal shell with rather unusual angular lines, was unveiled in November 2019.
His presentation caused quite a stir when an employee, in an attempt to demonstrate the machine's rock-solid sturdiness, smashed through an armored window with a steel sledgehammer, prompting Elon Musk to swear. A second attempt damaged another window.
Two days after the vehicle's unveiling, Tesla reported that it had received nearly 150,000 pre-orders, which required - and still require - an initial refundable payment of just $100.
In May, Elon Musk indicated that the goal was to manufacture 250,000 per year, stressing that this figure could double as its price makes it affordable.
At launch, the Cybertruck - which can go from 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds, according to Tesla's website - was to be available in three models, from $39,900 and 400 km range for the entry-level model, to $69,900 and 800 km range for the top-of-the-range model.
