Serious fires in Los Angeles: more than 145 km² already gone up in smoke, an impressive before-and-after picture

Steph Deschamps / January 12, 2025

More than 145 square kilometers have already gone up in smoke in California, according to figures released by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL Fire).

These figures include the fire raging in the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, but also other disasters across the most populous state in the USA.

At least ten people have already lost their lives in the fires that have encircled Los Angeles for several days. More than 10,000 structures have already been destroyed by the flames in the Pacific Palisades and Eaton neighborhoods.

Water and extinguishing products can't be sent to the fire properly because of the wind, US media report. Faced with these difficult weather conditions, the authorities are concentrating their efforts on rescuing victims, a fire department spokesman told CNN. At least 1,400 firefighters have already been deployed, said California Governor Gavin Newsom on X. In particular, off-duty and vacationing firefighters have been recalled.

The origin of the fire is not yet known.
