Shooting in Texas: 14 people injured, two seriously

Fourteen people were injured, two of them critically, in a shooting Friday night in Austin, Texas, police said, and they are searching for two suspects.

Several gunshots were reported around 1:30 a.m. local time on a busy downtown street, according to acting police chief Joseph Chacon, who spoke at a press conference about crowds like we used to see before Covid.

The investigation is ongoing and it may have been an argument that got out of hand. Two men are being actively sought, according to the official.

Police called on anyone with information or who took video on their cell phone to contact authorities.

The number of victims has risen to 14  people, compared to 13 previously reported, Chacon said.

Two of those injured are in critical condition, he said.

Almost all of these victims were innocent bystanders, Chacon said, noting that the investigation is still in its early stages and that it is preliminary information.

The police chief paid tribute to the speed with which officers responded, providing first aid and transporting some of the injured to hospital, which he said saved lives.
