U.S. police shoot black teenager with knife who allegedly tried to stab another person

Police in Columbus, the capital of the eastern U.S. state of Ohio, shot and killed a 16-year-old black teenager. Law enforcement had been called to a report of a person with a knife, the city's mayor, Andrew Ginther, confirmed Wednesday. According to local media, police responded to a 911 call about a female suspect who had attempted to stab another person. The Ohio Attorney General's Office of Criminal Investigation (OCI) opened an investigation. The responding officers were wearing a pedestrian camera.

A crowd of protesters gathered in the southeast part of the city, where the incident occurred, local media added. I ask our citizens to remain calm and let the BCI collect the evidence, the mayor called on Twitter, lamenting the tragic death of the girl.

The events occurred minutes before Derek Chauvin's guilty verdict in the death of George Floyd was to be handed down in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The white police officer held his knee on the neck of Mr. Floyd, a 40-year-old African-American man, for more than nine minutes, causing his death. The event sparked a historic wave of anger against racism and police violence in the United States.
