US elections: Trump denounces fraud, Biden wants to count all ballots

Steph Deschamps / November 5, 2020

Trump or Biden? The suspense remains. The Americans woke up Wednesday without knowing the name of their next president after a vote with the participation record and whose counting continued in seven key states. For their part, the two candidates spoke by tweets.

US President Donald Trump sought to cast doubt on Wednesday on the counting operations underway in several key states for the presidential election the day before, citing fraud without providing evidence.

Last night I had a good lead in a lot of key states, he tweeted. Then, one by one, they began to magically disappear with the appearance and count of surprise ballots.

It is actually the counting of ballots arrived by mail, which could take several days to be counted in some states. Overnight, the count of those ballots slashed Mr. Trump's lead in Michigan and Wisconsin, two of the key states on which the outcome of the election depends, and the count threatened to wipe out his lead in Pennsylvania in the coming days. He also stressed that pollsters were wrong for this election in a "historic" way.

Biden demands "relentless » count

Afterwards, his Democratic opponent Joe Biden promised a fight without respite until every ballot is counted, also on Twitter. The two men's campaign teams each tried to convince their candidates to win, in conference calls with the press.  if we count all the legal ballots, we think the president will win, said Bill Stepien, Donald Trump's campaign manager.

Final results may be late

But he stressed that the margins seemed thin enough in Wisconsin, one of the most contested states, to warrant a vote recount - an eventuality that would push back any certified outcome by days or weeks.

For his part, Mr Biden's campaign manager Jen O'Malley Dillon pointed out that the Democrat is ahead in enough states to reach the 270 voters needed for him to become the 46th president of the states. United. It's a sure conclusion, she said.

Total suspense

The suspense remained total Wednesday on the outcome of the American presidential election, while the final results in several states, some of which could be tilted to one side or the other, were still unknown. Former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden is slightly ahead of Republican President Donald Trump among the voters. A candidate must reach the 270 mark to be elected.
